The Bamburgh Hoard

Hoard is first discovered in Northumberland for over 100 years

Members of the Ashington and Bedlington Detector Club have, in early January 1999 collectively found 162 Saxon sceattas during several searches of a previously detected club field.

The hoard was found near Bamburgh, once the capital of the North. Its castle is an almost impregnable fortress. It was probably occupied by the Romans and was a Celtic stronghold called 'Dinguaroy'.

Sixteen members found the coins in varying numbers, one member found 33 others just two or three. They were found in an area some 70 yards long by 40 yards wide and had obviously been scattered by the plough over the years.

The club members believe that all the coins have been found and the Coroners Office has been informed of the find.

We shall keep you informed of any further developments.
