Farmer's son allowed to keep hoard of denarii

Kevin Elliot used milking buckets to collect 9310 Roman denarii, Britain's biggest find of Roman silver denarii, which he found within minutes of walking into a field with a metal detector for the first time.

An inquest has ruled that the hoard is treasure and belongs to the finder. Their value will be decided by the Treasure Valuation Committee in the coming weeks.

Kevin and his cousin Martin found the coins on a 400-acre farm at Shapwick, near Glastonbury, Somerset in August 1999. Kevin said his cousin Martin had to show him how to use the detector as they set off to search the field. Within a few minutes of entering the field he found a coin and just 30 minutes later were finding that many coins that they had to use milking buckets to carry them back to the farm. Archaeologists said that the hoard of coins had been buried beneath the floor of a previously-unknown Roman villa.
