Roman Hoard declared Treasure

A hoard of nearly 4,000 Roman coins found in a field in Gwent, South Wales by a member of the Gwent Metal Detecting Club, was recently declared Treasure by a inquest.

Edward Besly, assistant keeper at the National Museum of Wales, told David Bowen, the Gwent coroner, that the find included 700 coins from the time of the usurper Allectus, who reigned in Britain from 293 to 296AD.

Mr Besly said: "It is an exciting find and certainly the best haul of Roman coins I have ever seen. There were 3,778 coins in total and those from the reign of Allectus are particularly important."

The coins become Crown property, but the finder will receive a reward equivalent to their market value. Mr Bowen thanked him for contacting the museum about his discovery.
