VIKING HOARD FOUND

A priceless hoard of jewellery and coins more than 1,000 years old was found by a tourist guide as he picked up litter in a cave. He spotted the treasure in a crack in the rocks as he cleaned up after visitors to Dunmore Cave in County Kilkenny, Ireland.

The famous limestone cavern, which is an Irish national monument, was the scene of a massacre by the Vikings in 928 AD. As many as 1,000 people - mostly women and children who had sought refuge from the invaders - were found hiding in the cave and hacked to death.

Over the years many of the victims bones have been found.

The treasure includes unique silver jewellery, bronze objects and coins that can be traced back to before the start of the last millennium.

The cave has now been sealed off whilst the hoard is transferred to the National Museum in Dublin for cleaning and conservation. It will go on display later this year.
